computing professionals. It was later championed in design by IDEO’s leadership
to build interdisciplinary teams, and explored in management literature as “T-shaped
managers.” The concept has since spread well beyond tech or design into
operations, HR, and the public sector.
Why it matters for
everyday AI: if the human brings long horizontal knowledge and one or two deep
spikes, then AI’s most valuable role is to supply depth on demand in
adjacent or neighboring specialties. Instead of trying to be expert in
everything, you keep ownership of direction and judgment while asking AI to
fill specific deep gaps - methods, regulations, patterns, code idioms, or domain
nuances - precisely when needed.

Use AI as a specialist
